This reason why it is more difficult is that when upgrading from stable -> unstable: you are upgrading from libc5 -> libc6. Have you followed the steps in the mini-HOWTO for this? You can find it at: ftp://ftp.debian.org/pub/debian/doc/libc5-libc6-Mini-HOWTO.html.tar.gz
