Failing this, I'd like to send mail out > through my provider's mail server, and use some address as the SMTP > sender. Can Exim deal with this setup, and if so, how? Would some > other SMTP daemon be a better choice here? I've had the same problem, and solved it with sender rewriting in exim. This is what I have at the end of /etc/exim.conf: # This rewriting rule is particularly useful for dialup users who # don't have their own domain, but could be useful for anyone. # It looks up the real address of all local users in a file [EMAIL PROTECTED] ${lookup{$1}lsearch{/etc/email-addresses}\ {$value}fail} bcfrF # End of Exim configuration file The contents of /etc/email-addresses: # This file contains email addresses to use for outgoing mail. Any local # part not in here will be qualified by the system domain as normal. # # It should contain lines of the form: # #user: [EMAIL PROTECTED] #otheruser: [EMAIL PROTECTED] phil: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Here, "phil" is my username on the workstation "fury.brutsche.com" (notice it's not resolvable). The rewrite rule will replace "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (which shows up in messages sent via pine) with "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". I've had no problems since making this change. - -- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phil Brutsche [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG fingerprint: 9BF9 D84C 37D0 4FA7 1F2D 7E5E FD94 D264 50DE 1CFC GPG key id: 50DE1CFC GPG public key: http://tux.creighton.edu/~pbrutsch/gpg-public-key.asc -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.1 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE5yrPn/ZTSZFDeHPwRArfGAJ4t+bYYqGSZFvgUSRYFJMlQTabXlQCgnR86 JIJb/ljoZYHGdavszdzQ+vE= =RNkG -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
