I compiled mutt 1.3.15 with several patches an do not install
libiconv before. It works.
gromitt:~# dpkg -l | grep libiconv
gromitt:~# dpkg -l | grep libicon
gromitt:~#
Did you try compile mutt without any flags set by you?
