Hi list,This should not be happening.
I do hope this isn't too stupid a question. My system is configured to start x on login. Whenever I try to log into a non-x console with ctrl-alt-Fn, either as root or a normal user, the prompt claims "login incorrect". I'm not sure if that's meant to signify "password incorrect" for that user or something else, but I've tried it often enough to be sure about typing the correct password.
I suppose that's one of these super-safe security settings that I'll have to deactivate in one of the /etc/ config-files?
You can log into X, right? Do so, and open a terminal window, and type the command "su - <username>" and see what happens.
Also, at a console login, type in your password when asked for the username, so you can see the keystrokes you're making, to make sure that you don't have a strange console keyboard mapping that's changing one of your password characters.
You haven't been messing with the files in /etc/pam.d have you?
