Ever since installation the KDE login manager or what's it called takes care of login. I suppose when I see the login dialog X is already running? Logging into X sessions (either gnome or kde) works fine, su -ing to other users or to root works fine too. And no, I haven't messed with any of the pam stuff :-) I think you're right about "strange console keyboard mapping". I just checked: some keys, like q and a, are mixed up.
