where is setting to change resolution ??

Try removing the "DPMS" option on your monitor... otherwise your
config is correct to default to 1024x768
tried that -still doesnt work. here is a lspci list.

would the i810 driver be better than vesa?
also if i ctrl+alt+f? out of X when I try to go back all there is is a
blank screen?
in kinfo- shows the xserver in a 800x600 default res. where does it
source this info?

I'd give that driver a shot, certainly can't hurt to try... it's what
I'm using. I'm no expert, so perhaps someone with more experience can
chime in here!
