Try doing:

    aptitude search '~c'

to get a list of packages that have been removed but left configuration files lying around. One of them may be causing your problem.

You can purge them all by doing

    sudo aptitude -Pv purge $(aptitude search '~c' -F '%p')

if you're confident it won't hurt your system.
