Seems you're using the lightdm display manager and that it is not respawning correctly, or at all, when you log out. Maybe if you tried one of the other display managers? Rather than rebooting you might try goin to the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and restarting the service (as root) service lightdm restart or service lightdm stop service lightdm start after which you can return to the gui (Alt F7) and hopefully login again.
