Not sure about ideal:

    cat <foo.iso >/dev/sdb

is one char longer than

    dd <foo.iso >/dev/sdb

but it's often faster (you can speed up `dd` by providing a larger
`bs=` argument, but then you've lost the length advantage ;-)
