NetworkManager may use built-in, dhclient, or dhcpcd, see NetworkManager.conf(5). It has a plugin for ifupdown. It is configurable whether NetworkManager manages interfaces configured through /etc/network/interfaces. Actually it may be set to ignore any interface.
