Another option are color adhesive tapes. I got a couple of reels in a net in a DIY store. Each of them are about 2 cm wide by 10 m in black and white; and others bright red, green, yellow, blue, etc. They work reasonably well on cables, dongles, thumb drives, keys, etc. since the PVC / rubber like material smoothly snugs to the surface. They are good enough for small repairs (like a wire on a bike), too.
