The sequence: sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade sudo apt autoremove
Will (amoungst other things) upgrade the kernel to the latest stable kernel. There really is not any reason to specificly do an apt install linux-image-amd64, *unless* there is some reason you need to install some "special" kernel (eg an RT or debug kernel, etc.). Note: sudo apt upgrade *won't* install a new kernel, but apt full-upgrade will. This is a subtle difference between the two apt sub-commands: kernels (and a few other packages) are *never* "upgraded" by installing a newer version over the old one, they are always a "new" install. To avoid totally filling up /boot with many kernel images, older ones (2-3 versions down) are marked as auto-removable and can be cleaned up with apt autoremove.
