According to googling (not google AI but old style googling) it seems like when a password appears on the BIOS out of the blue, it is caused by something summarized as "INSYDEOS H2O NVRAM corruption". Also, apparently, taking the power of the battery won't clear the password, since the NVRAM is actually EEPROM...? Oh well!
