Karen,

After reading more of this discussion, I think I may have
misunderstood what you're trying to accomplish.

>From what I understand, you're planning to have a computer
with two hard drives, one running FreeDOS and the other
running Linux. You mentioned using one CPU core for DOS
and the other for Linux, with the intention of connecting
from DOS to Linux using SSH.

If I've understood that correctly, there's an important
technical issue to consider.

Simply having two CPU cores and two hard drives doesn't
allow two operating systems to run simultaneously. With
a conventional dual-boot configuration, only one operating
system runs at a time, regardless of how many CPU cores
or hard drives are installed.

To run FreeDOS and Linux simultaneously on the same
computer, you would need some form of virtualization
or another arrangement specifically designed to run
multiple operating systems.

Alternatively, if Linux is running on a separate computer,
you could certainly SSH into it from DOS, as you already
do with other remote systems.

I also realize that my earlier suggestion of using a
lightweight graphical desktop such as LXDE may not be
appropriate for your needs. If you prefer working entirely
from the command line, there are audio players that don't
require X or any graphical desktop environment.

One other consideration is that an audio player running
on a remote Linux system would normally send its audio
to that system's sound device, not automatically to the
computer you're using to connect over SSH.

Could you clarify whether you're planning to run FreeDOS
and Linux simultaneously on the same physical computer,
or whether Linux will be running on a separate machine?

If Linux were running on another machine then it would be
straightforward to SSH into it from DOS. And you could
connect speakers to that machine for audio.

I think understanding that distinction would help us
suggest a solution that actually meets your needs.
