Hello Kare,
This is appreciated, I have a question below.

I've not been following this thread closely so I may be off base here.  You said in the above that "If successful I will ssh into a Linux shell, but on a different drive of my own machine, local as you state here."
Yes, my hope is to remove the distance factor of the shell services I currently use, creating my own local Linux shell so to speak.

This sounds like you're expecting to access Linux running on the same machine that your Freedos system is running on.
Hopefully yes..although.

If my understanding is correct, what you are thinking will not work.  You can run either Linux or Freedos on the hardware.
that is rather disappointing, not even as a dual boot system? Not that such would accomplish what I want, save for my using ssh into the unit from the computer I am typing on now.

Though Freedos may support
multitasking, it appears to do so with add-on software, not natively.
Freedos does not really even support USB natively, lots of the system is add-on.
If I incorporate an add-on option, does this improve my chances at all?

  And
running a virtual machine under Freedos to then run Linux does not appear to be possible either.
Well..poodle noodle.
I have no interest in a virtual environment.

So you will need to have a dedicated system that boots your Linux environment, which you can then ssh to from your Freedos system. The Freedos system could be running in a virtual machine under Linux or a separate hardware system.

I understand. The problem with that idea though may be with running quality speech, and screen reader software.
Linux has neither that I can personally use.
Freedos can be a touch creative where ports are concerned and so forth.
Sigh, why is it, if I have enough processing power, memory and so forth, that two systems cannot exist harmoniously?

I hope this makes sense and is useful for you.
It does. may mean I have to create two systems, instead of one though.
would rather learn this at the outset, deeply appreciate the wisdom you are providing. May be more sensible to install my current DOS environment on the backup machine, if feasible, skip Linux all together, and spend resources finding an apple teacher who lives in Canada.
