Terry: Thank you for letting me know. I have to post this to the list, as my mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] bounced back - plus, this info may help other folks.
I always try to REMEMBER to turn the digital signature off - but occasionally I slip. I apologize. I have one thought on the reason for Outlooks behavior: My digital signature is currently issued by TrustCenter.DE and it is possible that their root certificate may not be installed in your workstation - while VeriSign and others are. I never realized that this could make a difference until you pointed it out today. Also, I know that MS Outlook has a feature where it checks the revocation list each time a message is received - causing long delays. We did have problems with another site's firewall, that sometimes would not permit certain SSL transactions - interfering with the revocation checking and causing Outlook to wait for a LONG time out before it eventually continued. The problem with the firewall was, that the state changed, or something like that. I remember that one person, after a while, found either in the MS knowledge base or in the help screens a way to turn off the revocation checking for digital signatures. That made a huge difference in the time it takes to open signed mail in Outlook. -----Original Message----- From: Support [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 05:46 AM To: 'Andy Schmidt' Cc: Smart Business Support Subject: email problems Hi Andy, I receive messages from you on the Declude and Ipswitch lists. I have always had a lot of trouble with your digitally signed messages but generally I could eventually read them. Sometimes they were fine and would give no problem at all other than a noticeable pause in opening and other times there would be delays of a minute or two before I could open a message. But I've switched to Outlook XP now as part of my Office XP upgrade. Now your digitally signed messages sometimes cause my entire workstation to freeze up for quite some time. The most recent message I finally had to delete and was never able to actually open it. I see an information message in the lower status bar that the message has an invalid signature. I tried everything I knew to open it for about 20 minutes and finally had to kill Outlook and restart it. Then I carefully opened the folder and right clicked the message and deleted it or otherwise I would have been back in the same mess. I don't have problems with other signed messages so I am unclear why this is happening on yours. For instance I also had a signed message from Jerod Bennet and it was fine. I had a signed message from you on the 4th that I could read as well. I thought you'd like to know about this in case it is happening to others somewhere and they haven't informed you. I don't know the problem and I'm not complaining as I appreciate your posts.
