A few people have already asked me about SortMonster Sniffer ( http://www.sortmonster.com ), so I thought I would let everyone know a little more about it.
It is a spam detection program by MicroNeil Research Corporation that analyzes the content of E-mail, rather than the IP address of the sending mail server and the headers. By doing this, it's able to catch a lot of spam that might otherwise go through. If a spammer finds a new open relay that hasn't been listed in any spam databases yet, for example, their E-mail might normally go through undetected. But with Sniffer, the content of the E-mail is analyzed, which can detect spam that is sent from an otherwise "good" mail server. We've been running it here for a while, and when I last checked our spamtrap (at http://www.declude.com/spamtrap ), it had caught about 75% of the recent spams we've received, which is a very good rate. The only false positives I've seen are occasional spams that we've been sent by our Declude JunkMail customers, and well, that just means that Sniffer is doing it's job (we're one of the few companies that actually receives junkmail intentionally). The technology used by Sniffer is quite impressive (you can read more about it at http://www.sortmonster.com ). It requires a subscription, but complements the existing tests in Declude very well, and is updated several times a week to catch new spam (and actually had a release that added code to detect the MyParty virus, just to be safe). Just for the record, this isn't a product of ours (it was developed by one of our customers). We just believe that it offers a significant advantage over most of the other tests that are available. -Scott --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com)] --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list.
