So it wouldn't work for the 6085 accounts on my default host.  :-)

Actually, there would normally be very little (if any) extra overhead.  The
only extra overhead I could see would be if there were more than about 500
users on any given domain (as there would be over 500 files in one
directory, which can cause a performance hit).
