I've been trying to read all the messages related to this test and I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly the test is, i.e. what purpose it serves, and how I go about putting it in place.
The SPAMDOMAINS test lets you define a list of domains that under more scrutiny than others. Specifically, any E-mail sent with a return address that is on a domain in the list must have a reverse DNS entry containing the domain name.
For example, if your list contains "hotmail.com", then any E-mail with a return address containing "hotmail.com" would have to have a reverse DNS entry that includes "hotmail.com" in it.
It is also possible to have aliases, where you may have a line "hotmail.com msn.com" in the SPAMDOMAINS text file, which means that "msn.com" is an alias for "hotmail.com" (meaning that E-mail with a return address including "hotmail.com" can have a reverse DNS entry including either "hotmail.com" or "msn.com").
The test is set up with a line such as the following in the global.cfg file:
SPAMDOMAINS spamdomains C:\IMail\Declude\spamdomainlist.txt x 5 0
The spamdomainlist.txt file has one line for each domain. Each line can either have one entry ("hotmail.com") or two ("hotmail.com msn.com", where msn.com is an alias for hotmail.com).
When a new text is introduced isn't there some way you can spell it out in exact detail which files have to be edited and what entries need to be added to put a new test into play?
Yes. We do that, after beta features are adding, and information is requested about those features.
Also, can't a brief description of the test be written up with a clear real-world example of how exactly it works?
There's been a lot of lengthy discussions on this list, but nothing briefer than the above information I believe.
Perhaps it's just my own stupdity but I'm having trouble gleaming the necessary
information from the resources (Manual, Release Notes and Discussion List)
which are at my disposal.
Here's the deal.
Features in the released versions should normally appear in the manual.
Features for beta versions are mentioned very briefly in the release notes, often with enough information to use them, but sometimes not (as was the case with the SPAMDOMAINS test). Beta features (and release features) get discussed in depth on this list.
Obviously there are some people on this list who don't work for Computerized Horizons yet manage to "get" these tests right out of the starting gate. I don't understand how people are making these leaps in syntax and logic with the dribs and drabs and shreds of information that we are given to go on. Can somone help me?
With the SPAMDOMAINS test, I think the problem is that you may have missed one of the original posts or follow-ups. With the SPAMDOMAINS test, it got a bit complicated for a few reasons (there have been over 100 posts mentioning the test, a major change was made to it allowing the aliases, and a lot of people were confused about the test (you aren't alone!)).
