At the time Brightmail did their filtering upstream. (I've heard this has
changed but haven't looked lately).

Anywho... The main reason is that we didn't want to route all of our
corporate mail through someone else and let them determine the rules.
Additionally, we didn't want any potential corporate espionage going on...
Not that email is secure, it was just that we slept better at night.
