I had something like this happen to me. I renamed the directory and recreated a new one to replace the old one. Then late nite I would del . the contents on the old folder from a command prompt. It may seem like it's getting nowhere, but it is. This way you can run it for a while and then do a control "C" to stop it should you need to. Resume later when you can.
