My immediate manager has some previous experience using a gateway device to deal with viruses and
other issues. He wants general information about putting something like that in front of our IMail
server (which also hosts our public Web site), and he's specifically interested in the Symantec
gateway product. I've never used a gateway. Suggestions?
Without knowing for certain *why* the E-mails with viruses are getting through, looking at a gateway isn't a good idea. For example, if the problem is that the mail client has a POP3 account that goes to an outside mailserver, adding a gateway won't help (the E-mail will bypass the gateway just as it bypasses the IMail server).
If your boss just likes the sound of the Symantec name, you might want to point him to http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/columns/executive_tech/article.php/3316511 to buy some time while researching why these E-mails are getting through. Given your description, it sounds like there may be an issue with the F-Prot updater, in which case switching to using a batch file may be better (which has the added advantage of not needing a user logged in).
