Every halfway-decent database server and Web server runs as a service, including SQL Server, IIS, Apache, Tomcat, Postgresql, etc. Those can be very complex programs. I work on a project that has about a dozen programs, all working together, and all running as services. There's no such thing as "too complex to run as a service." -- Rob
