I take your point - I suppose I only need look at some of the services running 
on my pc . . . .
When I mentioned in passing to the other developer what I was contemplating 
trying to do, I guess that instead of 'too complex' he really should have said 
'not possible to run it as a service' (in reality the application is a very, 
very simple one!), since in my ignorance I was contemplating trying to run an 
app that contained a unit with some visual components.

Every halfway-decent database server and Web server runs as a service, 
including SQL Server, IIS, Apache, Tomcat, Postgresql, etc. Those can be 
very complex programs. I work on a project that has about a dozen 
programs, all working together, and all running as services. There's no 
such thing as "too complex to run as a service."
