You're right, until your post I assumed he was pushing email encryption of
some sort and thought it could be kind of cool. Like so:

But yet another resource-hogging impediment to email I can live without.
The obvious solution (for me) is StripMime running on the server, with a
filter to discard messages with no body afterwards. That's very hard to
beat, but means I need to maintain a (short) whitelist of friends who can't
put things on the web directly.
