Component availability for Delphi has always been great as has the
peer support. I know I never would have made it this far without both, and
honestly this is the one thing that worries me more about switching than
anything else!
I've talked to quite a few VS users over the last two years, and
they don't give of themselves the way Delphi programmers do. And where am I
going to find no-cost alternatives to the Jedi Project? For that matter
what am I going to do about getting good error info the way the Jcl and my
debugger component does now? I asked around and I can't find anything but
high-cost alternatives! And it will be quite some time before I'm
proficient enough with .Net to again write my own solution!
And when you talk about the small Pro developer, I'm probably the
epitome of that class! <g> The majority of the work I've done for others in
the last two years has been pro-bono for those who simply cannot afford
custom solutions! I've made some money here and there, but barely enough to
cover the costs I incur in staying current! This year I won't even do that
because I've had to divide my time between two completely different
vocations in order to help out my Father! So even more so than many others,
value per dollar spent is an equation I cannot ignore!

Subject: RE: Delphi 2006 Announced...moved from Delphi List

I have a couple of things:

Stop making a big new release every year. A new big release costs time in
getting upgraded components/testing et c. I rather have and even pay for
servicepacks. But just don't let those servicepack break existing code. So
this is an economical question. Not just the money but the time as well
since time is worth more than money. I rather have those days off than
spending them on upgrading to a new Delphi version.

Make the IDE and compiler/VCL completely separate. Let me choose if I work
on a Delphi 5 project or a Delphi 2006 project. It can be done. I have setup
batch-script to select which VCLs to use and I have seen it other
environments.

Like I said I am using Delphi 5. The thing that I dislike the most is that
even though I got a very fast computer and a lot RAM it's very slow with
CodeInsight. It also takes a lot of time to load my packages (yes, I have
many and they are going to stay many, I like options and do a lot of
different kind of projects). I know that latter versions of Delphi is
supposed to be faster on this but I am quite ok with that D5 takes some time
to start and that CodeInsight takes a couple of more seconds on the first
run.

I also would like to say that Delphi probably have the best 3rd party
libraries I have ever seen. I am so happy when somebody asks me how I did
something in a program and I just say "well I have this component, I drop it
on a form, trigger some events and voila". That's one reason of why I am
staying with Delphi at the moment.

Regards, Fredrik.

There have been quite a few rather negative posts of people
who do longer consider Delphi upgrades worth the price.
Out of pure curiosity, does that mean that older Delphi versions
are already offering all you will ever need or that Borland is
no longer adding the features you want or any other reasons ?
(economy, platforms, other ... ?)
I wonder if there is anything Borland could do that, when
executed perfectly of course, would thrill enough to make you
reconsider upgrading Delphi ?
