I'm going to start the thread on this new Bru-Ha-Ha which I'm sure
will bring at least a few lurkers to the surface!
There's very little I hate more than being directly lied to. I
never tolerated it from my children, and they stopped trying at a very young
age, unfortunately I wasn't around when the new CEO of Borland was raised!
His very words, "I'm not here to sell the company", are indicative of a
problem that has been festering at the heart of the Borland Company for
many, many years, and that is that they don't give a dam about their
products, the developers who have bought them for all these years, or even
their own employees who made some of the greatest strides in modern
programming history!
It's not that expect a moral or even a conservative thought be given
by a money-company to the ideals that made them famous in the first
place...not in today's world! But this came much to close to the transition
period and he had to have known what was going down when he took the job.
So he's an f'n liar and that's all I have to say about him!
As to what it will mean, well I expect there will be literally reams
of speculative e-narrative on that subject until it's all over and done
with. For my part though I am going to look at it with an optimistic eye
simply because Delphi itself will finally have rid itself of a parentage
that was certainly nothing close to what it could or should have been in the
last five years! I hope Borland goes down the tubes with all hands still at
the wheel for the disrespect they have given Delphi and us!
So I guess the whole BDS thing is joke now, and even with
cross-licensing and patent sharing, Together, ECO, Caliber and few other
things will be split from the developer's tool chest without having to buy
separate products again. That's not much to worry about. ModelMaker will
still be there and even though I'm only lightly into it now, I expect having
it so tightly integrated with Delphi isn't absolutely necessary.
What IS necessary is for a well-funded and run "development" company
to be found as the new home for Delphi! One that can see the advantages it
holds over other systems now and in it's plans for the future! One that can
afford to continue the R&D necessary to making sure Delphi remains on the
cutting edge where we need it to be, and that can also afford to bring over
the development team and it's ideals as they are now so that there doesn't
end up being a 5 year hiatus in-between D2007 and D2008! One that won't be
competing within itself for dollars when things get tight, or that relies of
the dysfunctional attitudes of the internet investors that haphazardly does
a good thing once in awhile as they did with Google!
