I'd have to agree with Eddie Shipman, twice ... I also do not really believe in opensourcing if very large projects are concerned. On the other hand, Kylix opensource would definitely change the landscape ...
The only problem I see with opensource is that there is absolutely no guarantuee left on the part of continuity, or the direction a product is going ... It might live, it might die ... but it will never become a successtory like MySQL or Apache. A company behind a product can choose to invest in the future of that product. In the opensource environment, if a certain next logical step is to big, the project might be abandoned and die a silent death ... Furthermore, we are not just talking IDE here, we're talking compiler stuff ... For me, that's a whole different story then taking some opensource image or communication library, or some opensource component and port it to the next level ... I'm a delphi fanatic myself, I started out with turbopascal 3 in 1987 or so. Then when windows came around I choose the Borland side instead of the MS side, wich was at that point a very wise decision. Now I run my own software company, and allthough still being the Delphi fanatic that I allways have been, I'm a little more realistic because I have clients that I need to provide with continuity, and a company that needs to stay in the running. When starting off completely new projects, I catch myself considering if maybe this would not be the time to check out some alternative, as for example Chrome, or even VS. They'll never match my Delphi, but they might bring bread on the table in the future. I love Delphi, but I'm not prepared to go down with it. If it goes opensource, I'll support it, but during that time I will keep all options open, even if it means going M$. I don't like them, but they have come a long way, and at some point, one might consider it could be better to go with the flow. Let's hope it never has to come that far ....
