I have to chime in and say that I agree with Alan. Open Source would be
the only way to save Delphi at this point. No company is going to adopt
Delphi or continue to use Delphi on new projects with Borland backing
away from what has been seen as their flagship products.

Any other outcome is certain doom. No one will invest in the further
development of the language or tools like the open source community
will. I really just don't see any other outcome that has positive
results for the future of the language or its adoption.

And to the point that open source is 'anti-capitalist' throwback is very
short sighted. You need only take a step back and look around the total
landscape and realize its open source innovation thatÂ’s driving a lot of
change in the industry today. That comment demonstrates a complete lack
of understanding of the open source model. Is it for everyone and
everything? No of course not! But it is a very successful model, and
given the state Borland development tools find themselves in today, one
that could prove to be a saving grace.

The hard truth is no serious development shop is going to invest capital
in a Borland solution given its current state. At the very least, Open
Source is an insurance policy for companies willing to adopt those
tools. I just don't see any serious company buying the Borland brand
to harvest and grow the technology.

Just my 2 cents from the cheap seats.
