I'm finally back from my nearly two month hiatus, and so wanted to thank those who sent me their best wishes while I was ill. Hopefully I won't give reason in the future for that kind of vacation to come up again! Also I'm sorry if I didn't get back to anyone who might have e-mailed me directly or via any of the e-lists during this time. I unknowingly left my system running and connected to the net while away and my security subscriptions just happened to run out only 4 days before I returned! Of course my HD, by the time I got to look at my waiting e-mails, ( of which there was reportedly over 700, NOT counting over 1000 spams ), most of them had been mangled or destroyed along with nearly everything else including my downloaded copy of VS 2005, while BDS 2006 was one of the few apps to survive in a run-able condition! As I would have to purchase a new copy of XP Pro anyway, having lost the OEM version by theft sometime back, I decided I might as well just go ahead and install Vista Ultimate. The install and its use has so far gone a lot better than I had read it would and as compared to the messages I've read on the Vista Newsgroups, but should anyone here be having any particular problems as related to Delphi I'd like to hear about them when you have the time! In any case, as finding new contracts at my skill level had been getting tougher and tougher to find over the last year, I must admit to having ignored Delphi quite a bit during the last part of 05 and most of 06 in order to learn NET...hoping that perhaps I would find work more available in that arena once I knew what I was doing...AND I had lost a lot of faith in Borland as well. So when RemObjects came out with an IDE that worked with VS to allow using Pascal and that was in my estimation, superior to Delphi.NET, that is the direction I decided to go in for awhile. I did learn a lot, and RemObjects is a great little development group that works hard to help one succeed with their products, so I DO plan on getting back to their system in just a few months to continue my .NET education. But taking the loss of Visual Studio as an omen, I decided NOT to re-download it just now, instead, I rifled through my ex-wife's purse for her credit card, ( Just kidding! ), and picked up the CodeGear Delphi 2007 Pro Upgrade. If nothing else, and I cannot find any decent work out there, I will get back to a shareware project that I've been trying to complete for quite some time...either being interrupted by actual work, or as in this last time, the release of Vista requiring me to reconsider many of the visual aspects of my current version.
So far, and admittedly only working with it for a short time, I have to admit that it appears CodeGear has really cleaned the BDS 2006 IDE up! The streamlining has made at least the Delphi Pro version a lot faster in both startup and shutdown, easier to setup and work with, and with Web connections and a Help system that is much better than before! Unless I'm missing something not yet obvious to me, I believe that I will enjoy working with this version much more than I did with ANY previous version since! I'm beginning to believe that once again Delphi has the chance to survive against its competition...a doubtful possibility in my eyes just a year ago! Tomorrow I'm going to kick back and listen to the original studio version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" after thanking my higher power for the opportunities given me as I do every year, and then am going to start cooking Easter dinner for my family.
