Hi Bob,
Great to hear from you! As I didn't even have my old laptop still
in working order after the fire hoses drowned me out, I had no way of
keeping up, and it seems a lot more has changed over these eight months than
I would have expected! Prism and BlackFish being just two things I was very
interested in.
But most difficult to accept has been the loss of archived code...my
own and that of others...as well as anything else I had stored on
disks...practically my whole life! <g>
Luckily I'd already been somewhat familiar with Oxygene from
RemObjects, and Marc gave me an extension on my license so that I could
download the latest version from the two or three I had missed. And from
what I've been told, there is essentially no difference between Oxygene with
the supported version of VS 2008 and Prism.
As for Delphi itself, I had been purchasing the Pro upgrades since
D2 first appeared, so when I was finally able to setup a new system just a
week and a half ago, I ordered D2009 sight unseen and am now working on a
variety of ways to get back at least the more important components and
libraries I had used. Unfortunately, much of what I was still using with
D2007 was out of date even then, so I'm going to have a tough time replacing
things like ImageLib, various TurboPower products, and many others. Still
though it feels great to be able to work again, and I'm looking forward to
possibly find some supplemental contract work once I'm flying at full speed
again!
Your offer to replace 2 books of yours I had is greatly appreciated,
however I wasn't able to find any of my purchase records. All my CD-RW's
were destroyed, and I wasn't able to afford even an attempt at recovering
anything from my Hard drives. All I can tell you is that I had purchased
one book on Delphi Win32 Database development that was unspecific as far as
version is concerned. I do remember getting that soon after D2007 was first
released, and that it did have info on BlackFish SQL, however I don't
remember what the exact title was. The other was an electronic download of
courseware that was specific to D2007, stepping through all that was new in
that version. It had the title, Delphi 2007 for Win32 Development
Essentials. If you're able to find a record of these, (Both ordered via
Lulu ), and can replace them in PDF form, it would indeed be a great help!
If Blackfish SQL is what they say it is, and now that it's included with
D2009, I intend to make good use of it! Nexus, which started out to be
great, let me down as far as service and ADO connectivity are concerned, and
AbsoluteDB, although seemingly perfect for the kind of embedded work I do
was simply too slow at times.
BTW...I'm sure you remember Bob Viverette and his monthly web mag on
Delphi. There was a lot of great stuff n this mag, and up until last year,
I had every issue burned onto CD along with all the Delphi Mag issues and
supplemental code. I know I'm going to really miss both of these as time
goes on. Most of the content in both were still and will remain pertinent!

You missed the release of Delphi 2009 - introducing native support for
Unicode, Generics and Anonymous Methods (as well as DataSnap 2009).

Plus Delphi Prism as one and only Delphi for .NET route now (so VCL for
.NET is effectively dead, and so is IntraWeb for .NET, which was based
on VCL for .NET - although IntraWeb for Win32 is alive and kicking!).

You may have missed the news about the future of the Delphi compiler;
basically cutting it in a front-end (potentially supporting language
enhancements) and a back-end (potentially supporting more than just
Win32 and shortly Win64).

Let me know if you purchased any of my books from Lulu.com which may
have been burned. I'll gladly send you some PDF replacements!

Groetjes,
           Bob Swart
