Personally, I have always agreed with that myself, BUT even when
I was manager of an insurance brokerage, we were constantly pushed by
our companies to upgrade. And as I said earlier, nearly every client I
ever had all demand a visually stimulating interface that runs now on
Vista! They don't even seem to care how well the internals actually
work, as long as it looks good.
The best example I can give is the way people buy houses and
vehicles these days. It used to be people were concerned with things
like a home's furnace, the roof...and when buying a car, how well it
handled, what kind of brakes, gas efficiency. Now they want to know if
the home has a built-in Microwave and central lines for their home
network! And for cars, just take a look at the newer commercials...they
spend more time talking about it's video system and ipod hookups than
anything else, because that's what people are looking for and care
about!
At the same time I know a guy who still uses BASIC and works
only on old DOS programs in L.A.! So it all depends upon your client
base.

Good point you got there, in my opinion, the best user interface is one
button which occupies whole visible area on the screen. The caption on
the
button is - "Do everything I need right now" and when user pushes it, it
actually does it. Of course this is far away from reality, maybe AI will
make it possible but the point is, the good user interface should not be
fancy if it doesn't need to. If program performs simple repetitive tasks
and
4 functions that keep it under control (like on/off/load/save) no need
to
design 3D interfaces.
