Outlook Express has this silly Offline button that changes to Online as soon as
the button is locked down.
I dislike it intensely as having a button with "Online" written on it in the
depressed position implies to me that the Online state has been entered.
However IMO your suggestion of a single button (one that doesn't lock down) and
changes from stop to start or VV is an acceptable compromise.
An interesting idea would be to have both states shown with the one that is not
available greyed out (of course you can't do this with ordinary buttons)
