My boss - GM (or something like that) for Inprise NZ.

true, and I think it may come with an ISQL sample in VB (yuck). Hell, it
should take all of about 2 minutes to write a functional ISQL like IB's
one (or MSSQL's one for that matter), its basically just an edit box, a
query, a button/actionlist, and a grid or memo for the results.
Absolutly trivial.

yeah, I know what it used to be like - the school I went to didn't have
much budget (ie, nothing) so I started out on a Z80 running CPM (with
64K, tho), using TP3.0. That was in 3rd form - we had a single 386 by
the time I left there in 5th form.... the Z80's were still going tho :)
The school I went to after that had all sorts of flash stuff (state
school, ya see), but noone was allowed in the room outside of class
time.

Hell no! Infact, I dont think I'd use a non-C/S db EVER AGAIN - LocalIB
is about the minimum I'd go for - better yet, MIDAS and/or client data
sets for really small stuff...

read dilbert, or userfriendly. Its more productivity draining, and
people dont think you've lost it (quite as much....)

Well, I was more talking from a technical view - I have used MSSQL6.5 a
_lot_ at my previous job (Glazier AK), both as a user/developer and an
admin, and from a technical standpoint, I _dont_ like it. Hell, I'd
almost throw it away just to get pre- and post-triggers!!! Log files
were a pain in the butt, tho I suppose in SS7 they just grow to consume
available space, no decient SP language (not that IB is much better),
etc etc.
I think someone needs to come out with a DB engine that has the best of
all current products - Oracle's scalability and internal language
(pl/sql - hell, Java would do nicely too), IB's foot print and
time-to-come-back-up-after-NT-screws-the-pooch, MSSQL's marketing :),
Informix's, um.... (Kerry!!!!) - you get the idea. That would definatly
kick a fair amount of butt.

Fair enough. You could just get the working ODBC driver, or even use
something like IBObjects, IBX (Delphi5), or FIBO (interbase.com)
:)
> c/ TransactSQL from my eval is better that the IB's language
Can't agree. It has a few better functions, but in general, I found it
to be a LOT less usable than IB's SP language, for most things I used it
for anyway...
> Mind you I am only writing from experience..have you used MSSQL Nic?
Just a little, yes. Well, OK, I used it for about 14 months on about 3-4
projects, non of them with Delphi tho (all ADO/ASP), plus
adminning/setting up/maintaining various DB's (Netway, Lion Nathan, ASB,
internal ones). Hell, I even passed an MCP exam in it!!
It has its good points, and its bad points - so do all DB's, Interbase
is no exception (can everyone say "sweep bug in 5.5" in unison, please!)
- but overall, I'm a developer - I dont like pissing around with DB
optimizations - and with IB, I dont have to, which I like - I can just
get on with it and develop my app(s).....
OTOH, I'm now doing 99.9% of my development in Java, so MSSQL is not
even an option, being that the ODBC-JDBC bridge is not, um, ideal - roll
on InterServer and Oracle....
