Ping is a very basic test to make sure the proxy is working as expected. It
makes sure that the whole connect process, from looking up the DNS to
actually connecting with server works. To put it bluntly, if you have
problems getting ping to work, chances are you will have problems getting
other TCP/IP ports to work. A lot of people tend to use their browsers as a
proof that the proxy works - the truth is the browsers will even work
without the proxy client! Which brings up your next point:

You only need to proxy client if you have software that does not know how to
talk to proxy servers that need access to a server on the other side of the
proxy. IMHO, the proxy client is more trouble than it is worth.
