I think that IB has always had the idea with lic.s personally.
I.e. if you wnat MSSQL, you have to buy the product, and you get 5 free
lics.
In most cases for us, we only need 1-2 lics, and its less than $500 !!
I think form memory MSSQL is $1300 or there abouts.

We are - for 5.6, which is not free. Dale (Inprise CEO) decided that IB was
never going to compete head to head with MSSQL, Oracle etc, most likely 'cos
Inprise does not have enough $'s to put into marketing it - so they
opensourced it and spun it off as a seperate company, with "no" ties to
Inprise.

technical reality is, IB on linux is an excellent solution for 90% of
systems in NZ (Telecoms core system and such not withstanding), as a lot of
people here know.

They are just going thru the final stages of splitting Interbase the
division into Interbase Inc. Or something like that.
