I've read more than once in the IB newsgroups that IB 6 will quite safely
access an IB5 database (as dialect 1) and even earlier versions,
notwithstanding what it says in the manual. The manuals are good but it's
known that they're not perfect, so a little less "RTFM" if you please.
Having said that, there was a discussion only yesterday that warned of a
bug, such that you may not be able to access the database in 5.6 afterwards!
See the "Warning: IB6 and backward compatibility" thread in
mers.interbase.list. The safest course will always be to backup and
restore.
