I agree with Willie here - but only really 'cos I like writing apps, not
managing databases. Aside from that, I dont much care anymore.

You might soon tho..... it depends where you work. There again, anti-MS
retoric (sp?) is so ingraned into about 1/2 of NZ IT (the other half love
MS, usually) that its almost acceptable for IT staff to say "damn, I can't
fix it, its a microsoft problem" - even if its the tech being a total idiot.
And there are a lot of idiots passing themselves off at experts at the
moment.

Well, I'm not - being that IB is now opensores (read: we dont get any/much
money from it), I couldn't care less which DB people use. I like IB is most
situations I've encountered so far, but I'm about to drop it in the project
I'm working on at the moment and going to MSSQL, 'cos (a) is has FT indexing
and (b) its already installed in the enterprise I'm working in. I'd like to
see Oracle in here, but its too expensive, and they dont have skilled staff
to deal with it, and Interbase is not currently up to the job.
Just IMO. As I've said before, most DBs, MSSQL (MSDE) and Interbase
included, are more than a perfect fit for 90% of companies and situations in
NZ - which one you chose is really up to you. A free database doing the same
job as a pay-for one is going to be a better fit, cost-wise, 9/10 times.
A vi vrs Emacs or Mac vrs PC war, anyone!??!
