Sorry I can't let this pass.....

Does it also, like it OS brethren, spend all it's idle time looking for
available resources to hog?

Why not? even the undisputed master - Oracle - offers versions that cover a
wide range of system requirements, from personal up to inter-galactic.

In my limited circle of developer friends I know of 2 (probably 3 actually -
none of which are called Nevan or Nic) that have worked with both and they
all prefer IB after their experiences. When asked there was absolutely no
hesitation.
I reckon it comes down to personal preference, they all have advantages and
disadvantages - I prefer IB, I'm used to it and can do everything I need to
do with it - the open sourcing although initially a debacle has opened a
whole new universe of potential. There are continual enhancements (and bug
fixes) being made and the timing of these is not based on marketing/profit
strategies - people (developers) want something that goes, goes well and
they want it ASAP so they get down and make that happen.
A final inflammatory statement and one that is purely opinion - the main
advantage of SQL Server that I can see (apart from the extra harware
sales - if that's part of your business) is the old (and slightly modified)
adage - "you'll never lose your job by choosing Microsoft".....
