In the "VB Beats Delphi in 'independent' review" thread Neven said:
"Are they trying to sucker us to C++ so we miss the VB -> C# Stampede?"
Rather, I think, there may be a Delphi -> C# Stampede.
As background to my ruminations I present the following articles.
C#, the natural progression
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/library/jw-csharp.html
C#: A language alternative or just J--?, Part 2
An in-depth look into the semantic differences and design choices
between C# and Java

I chose to learn Delphi because it offered me near C++ functionality, but
with Visual Basic like development speed. I have never quite understood why
more developers did not make this choice.
However the above articles make it clear that Microsoft has cloned and
improved the basic Delphi architecture, and that C# will have the same
advantage over C++ and VB that Delphi has. Thus Delphi immediately looses
the competitive advantage that it gave me. C# also has the further advantage
that it will support all the latest and greatest API calls that Microsoft
releases a lot sooner than Delphi is likely to.
As Delphi programmers we are better placed to understand and use C# than VB
programmers. Indeed very few of the VB programmers I know are even
interested in C#! So surely we should all be installing our C# beta kits?
The only way I can see Delphi surviving is if Linux gains in popularity
enough to make the Kylix project a success. Thus if we as Delphi users are
interested in supporting Delphi, we surely need to be actively promoting
Linux as well?
Any thoughts or comments?
Martin
