For those interested - I have solved the problem (found clues on the net)

I uninstalled (again) and reinstalled using the Server Certificate Key not the Simultaneous User Certificate Key. (yes - I should have known what I was doing)
It all works ...
Obscure error for the wrong Certificate Key being used :-(

Just had a look (ok just discovered that there is a log file) - it comes up with

"InterBase database support is not licensed."
followed by
"C:\Program Files\Borland\InterBase\bin\ibserver.exe : The guardian was unable to launch the server thread. errno : 1053"

Only problem I ever had was that the entry was missing from the services file - the service did not have access to read it. Then I got something like this. Also check the interbase log file for any errors reported.

Subject: [DUG]: Interbase

G'Day,

I know this is not strictly Delphi but...
[I am subscribed to the Interbase list - but I have never seen a posting]

I have been lumbered with the task of upgrading IB 5.6 to 6.0 for our Delphi Apps.

I have installed Interbase 6.0 but cannot get the Interbase guardian (Service) to Start.
I get the following error:
"Could not start the InterBase guardian service on local computer.
The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error or an internal service error.
If the problem persists, contact your administrator."

Any help, ideas, advice much appreciated - I have tried various places on the net, but without an actual error code etc. not having much luck...
