I think that it also depends on what your projected future use is going to be of the component. If you are going to be involved in encryption a bit then of course it'll make more sense to learn about it. But for one off uses then buying someone else's effort whilst only understanding it to the minimum neccessary is probably a better way to go IMHO. It all depends on the situation really. I might also take into account what the current goal is - is it to further myself or is it to get the product done for the client. It might actually be cheaper to not buy, but with the trade off of taking longer to implement and test. Resulting in me buying it anyway to get the product done out the door quicker. And often people just ignore everything and do what they feel like doing at the time. :o) This style of argument is normaly reserved for 'build it' vs 'buy it' situations though - and I seem to have deviated a a bit. It's before 9:30am so I still not responsible for what I say yet. For my situation I'm surrounded by thirdparty components, mainly UI stuff. Things like email, encryption, compression etc... we have just bought. If it don't work, or behaves funny sometimes, and you paid for it then you can go hassle them about it! Of the 1.6 million lines of code in the main product here, less than 50% has been written by us. > > > Just my two cents worth. :o) > > Hmm... if 'a few hours' is worth more than US$100, then by > extrapolation > this email too you... what, a few seconds? :> Alternativly, is it cheaper to make lunch for one's self in the morning before work or instead spend the 5 minutes working and buy lunch later in the day? ;o) It's a stressfull life you know with hard decisions like that to make. :> Nahum. > > -- > Corey Murtagh > The Electric Monk > "Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur!" > > -------------------------------------------------------------- > ------------- > New Zealand Delphi Users group - Delphi List - > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Website: http://www.delphi.org.nz > To UnSub, send email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > with body of "unsubscribe delphi" > Web Archive at: http://www.mail-archive.com/delphi%40delphi.org.nz/ > --------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Zealand Delphi Users group - Delphi List - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.delphi.org.nz To UnSub, send email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] with body of "unsubscribe delphi" Web Archive at: http://www.mail-archive.com/delphi%40delphi.org.nz/
