Many companies offer a sliding scale of upgrade incentives. i.e. those upgrading from the most recent version get the cheapest deal, those upgrading from 2 or 3 previous versions a slightly worse deal and anyone upgrading from an even older version an even slightly worse deal still.
But it's a rare company indeed that says.... "you may be a customer but you're such an out of date customer that we really don't consider you a current customer at all and you're gonna have to start over if you want to carry on using our products". Perhaps it would be worth asking them if they would consider a diminishing discount for upgrading from older systems - so if you're not shelling out the cash for new versions all the time, you can still get some advantage over new purchasers by having invested in their products in the past?
