1. Yes 2. Yes 3. No 4. None (no time) There are a lot of businesses like us with established software and libraries written in Delphi. There is absolutely no compelling reason for us to switch to another language, or even start some new projects in another language, while there are huge reasons why we shouldn't (ie the huge amount of experience and code we already have in Delphi).
If new versions of Delphi suck then that might make me think more carefully about it, and when Delphi 8-2006 were the new releases I certainly had some doubts. Now though I think Embarcadero are doing a reasonable job of extending and improving Delphi, even if I disagree with some of the priorities (Project X is probably a waste of time IMO but we have had that discussion already!). I think there is still plenty of work around for Delphi developers - all that Delphi code out there isn't just going to go away and will need to be maintained. However, the question that should be asked is how many people are starting new projects in Delphi (as opposed to C# / Java / Ruby etc). It's my understanding that specialized skills (Delphi Programming) usually demand higher rewards as opposed to commodity programming (C# or Java), but I guess it's mostly going to come down to supply and demand. All the same - it's probably worth learning another language. I haven't started any kind of new project for awhile, and have been just enhancing our existing products. I've just started learning Ruby on Rails (although haven't gotten very far as yet), which I hope to start something with this year. How about other people: 1. Still maintaining Delphi code? 2. Started a new Delphi project in the last year? 3. Started a new project in another language in the last year (what was the language)? 4. What other languages are you using learning? My Answers 1. Yes, 2. No, 3. No, 4.
