Out of curiosity I did a quick comparison with Vodafone UK. The HTC Magic handset over there is "free" on ALL plans, but the plans start at 25 GBP/mth. This is comparable to (only slightly better specified than) the $60/mth plan here. At current forex rate, 25 GBP is approx NZ$55, so the price is quite comparable too.
The handset cost on a $60/mth plan in NZ is only $220. Given the vast difference in economies of scale between the UK and NZ markets, I personally don't consider this to be all that "inflated", merely what you might reasonably expect (and possibly better than you might expect) given that NZ has 1/15th the population yet with a very comparable geographic area (and in some respects more challenging topography). (Population density: 16/km2 vs 246/km2). The retail price of the phone itself is heavily inflated in the NZ market. Its always been the case of a supply and demand pricing.. Small cool form factor always creates a ripoff..
