Can argue over “Real”, but SQLLite is likely the widest used Database
The list at
http://www.sqlite.org/famous.html
is an interesting read – Skype, Microsoft, GE, Mozilla (Firefox bookmarks and
history), Adobe, Airbus (used in flight systems), Apple (iOS, Apple Mail and
Safari), Google Android (database services layer), Blackberry
Obviously lightweight and robust enough as well as free. The list of uses on
mainly on growing market devices implies it has a major future.
Some good points on the architecture – highly concurrent reads, ACID
transactions, high volume automated tests.
Firebird embedded is probably one of the few comparable in size – has anyone in
Firebird tried to make it a competitor to SQLLite?

There is of course SQLLite but that is not a client server database by any
stretch. A very useful DB for particular uses and quite widely used, but not a
"real" DB by most terms.
