If you're on Red Hat I'd definitely recommend just getting the rpm at  
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php? 
group_id=131204&package_id=143910 . One 'rpm -Uvh DenyHosts*.rpm' and  
you're ready for 'service denyhosts start'.
