Thanks for taking care here, since I know that such things get mixed up very often. Maybe I can shed some light on what Björn proposed and what I assumed ... Björn and I have been in (more or less) regular contact since three years. Since the first meeting at the LinuxTag, we've discussed how to improve usability within FLOSS projects. Consequently, we've also discussed how to involve users, and how to guide development to shape software according our user's needs. Concerning the latter, you're right that the goals (e.g. hypothesis) of a survey and the required confidence level both affects methods and procedure. But, at the moment, it seems that our project has rather basic needs - one of the first things to clarify would be who our current users are, and what they are usually doing with LibreOffice. Giving users (at least) some voice / face. To me, Björns proposal is one of the first steps ... and I fully trust him with that (and much much more *g*). But, from my point-of-view, there will soon be a need to gain more / specific knowledge from our existing user base. Thus, my aim is to get in touch to the users (who might not even know us) via the product we distribute. That leaves us quite some degree of freedom for doing good research - good for the users, and for us.
