Actually, flat design and Swiss style are both very contemporary, at least
in application design.
They're a cornerstone of Android application design, of Microsoft's Modern
Windows UI (or whatever it's called now), of Google's and Facebook's web
application design, and they're appearing in more and more places (e.g.
Vimeo, Kickstarter, Smashing Magazine, ...).

That said, the problem with Alex's proposal isn't Swiss-related.
The problem is that he doesn't follow the design guidelines (and that his
progress indicator and Start screen can't be implemented as proposed), with
the biggest problem being that the proposal doesn't use any shade of
LibreOffice's green.

We have (via a public mailing list, G+, and FB post).
The truth is, we're really running out of time here, and when/if we pick a
proposal, it must be at least nearly in shipping state.
