No, I've always used standard/LTR interfaces :) In pretty much every other program current is on top and old is on bottom. Thus the logical precedence is current then old, hence current on the left and old on the right. Aesthetically I agree closing it by moving focus away without a button is better, but usability wise? I can't answer that. Keep in mind that the custom colors popover won't be closed once you choose a color, unlike the normal color picker popover. As Kévin said the color map wouldn't replace the sliders, it would either replace the wheel or be added as an alternate option (it's already implemented).
